The Seattle Film Institute  Screenwriting Concentration

Develop Your Skills.  Build Your Portfolio.  Launch Your Career.

Overview

The Seattle Film Institute’s Screenwriting concentration prepares students to write for movies, television, and emerging media. Classes are taught by working industry professionals who inspire as they instruct, guiding students through first drafts, rewrites, and a polish of their projects. Students also graduate with a video demo-reel of selected scenes from their scripts.

The Writing Portfolio

Screenwriting Students graduate with the following:
Feature-length screenplay with rewrite and polish
Television pilot-script with rewrite and polish
Television spec-script with rewrite and polish
Narrative audio-script with rewrite and polish
Video-game presentation packet with rewrite and polish

The Video Demo-Reel

In addition to their portfolio of written work, SFI Screenwriting students graduate with a video demo-reel made up of selected scenes from their portfolio-scripts; created in collaboration with instructors and students from SFI’s Filmmaking and Acting programs.

Take Control of Your Career

The SFI Screenwriting Concentration is available at both the undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MFA) levels.

Undergraduate (BA) Screenwriting Program

The six-quarter undergraduate screenwriting concentration combines four-quarters of screenwriting with two-quarters of basic filmmaking skills. This combination provides our undergraduate screenwriting students the ability to bring their scripts to life as they forge collaborative working relationships with our undergraduate filmmaking students.

Graduate (MFA) Screenwriting Program

Our graduate-level students take screenwriting as the first year of our two-year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Filmmaking & Producing. After developing their writing skills and building their portfolio of professional-grade work samples in year-one, SFI Graduate-Level Screenwriting students move on to year-two and the Seattle Film Institute’s Producing for Film program.
In the Producing for Film program students learn how to initiate and finance film & video projects; guide them through the pre-production, production, and post-production phases; and shepherd them through the maze of sales, marketing, and distribution.
These complementary skill-sets uniquely prepare our students to create their own projects and take them to the marketplace as writer-producers.

“The future belongs to the writer-producer.”

Writer, Producer, and Director Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible series, Top Gun: Maverick, The Usual Suspects, Edge of Tomorrow) discusses the future of screenwriting.
