Whether a feature film, television or web series, stage play, interactive web platform, or video game, no creative project is initiated and guided through to completion without someone making the decision that “I’m going to get this made.” That person is the producer.
The Seattle Film Institute’s Master of Arts (MA) in Producing for Film, provides students the expertise to pursue a career as a film, television and digital content producer. The skills and abilities developed during the program prepares students for a wide-range of career paths as well as providing the ability to generate their own projects and see them through to completion. The program focuses on the core competencies every producer needs to have including:
- Acquiring and developing properties
- Assembling and working with a creative team
- Legal Issues
- Writing a business plan
- Marketing and distribution
- Pitching projects effectively
In the program, students develop producing skills as they directly apply them to building a comprehensive presentation portfolio for a specific project. The presentation portfolio revolves around a creative and business blueprint designed to convey the scale, scope, tone, and tenor of the actual project to potential investors and collaborators. The program culminates with a formal presentation of the portfolio projects to an invited audience of potential investors and film industry professionals.
At the completion of the program, students have the tools and hands-on experience to produce films and a skill-set that is directly applicable to other career paths encompassing new and emerging media, internet and digital media production, advertising, hi-tech game development and entrepreneurial ventures. Perhaps more importantly, graduates have the skills, abilities, and confidence to pursue their own creative goals and produce their own successful careers.
